Ricardo L Rodriguez MD
Baltimore, Maryland

"I look tired all the time"
"I have puffy eyes"
"I have dark circles under my eyes"
"I have extra skin on my eyelids"

What will the eyelift surgery do for me?

Eyelift or blepharoplasty surgery removes excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids. It gives the patient a more refreshed, rested, and youthful look.

Who benefits from the eyelift procedure?

Eyelid reshaping is often requested even by those in their twenties. Many of these people have the outer corner of the eye situated at a level below that of the inner corner. Some describe this as a puppy dog look. They often request an almond shaped eye (Tiger Woods, Beyonce). Others (often of Asian heritage) request widening of the eye.

In the mid to late thirties the skin on the eyelids relaxes and becomes thinner. The cheek and the eyebrow also descend , giving a crowded look to the eyes. As they descend they tend to pull the outer corner of the eye down.

You can get some idea if you might benefit from an eyebrow lift or a cheek lift, by looking in the mirror and raising these structures about 1 cm (<0.5 ").

Can my sagging upper eyelids be treated by a browlift instead?

Yes, in fact, often times Dr. Rodriguez prefers to treat sagging upper eyelids with a browlift. He feels that drooping eyelids are usually a result of a sagging brow. He feels that lifting the brow is the most natural way to bring the eyebrows and lids back to where they should be in their youthful state. To read more about Dr. Rodriguez' thoughts on why some patients need a browlift more than an eyelift, please read his blog.

Is there any risk of damaging the eye?

The risk is very slight since we are highly skilled and perform a large number of these operations. The eye fat removal is done through a tiny incision inside the eyelid. A special protective shield is in place over the eyeball throughout the surgery. Most of the surgery is done on the outside of the eye.

How long is the healing for the eyelift procedure?

The area around your eyes will be bruised for about 10 days. Many people go out in public with large sunglasses. Sometimes there is residual swelling for longer. This can often be helped with massage.

Will the procedure hurt?

Eye lift surgery can be performed under local anesthesia in the office or in the out-patient hospital setting with ‘twilight’ anesthesia. If you elect to have the procedure under local anesthesia, Dr. Rodriguez will ensure that the area is numbed enough so that you do not feel anything.

Many people say that the most painful part is the removal of the stitches. In our Baltimore office we place the stitches a certain way so that their removal is almost painless.

How much does the eyelift procedure cost?

The eyelift procedure is less expensive if performed in the office because there are no hospital or anesthesia fees. If performed in the office, the physician fee for the upper eyelift procedure is $1800.

Financing is available.
