Liposuction cannulas: CosmeticSurg video journal with Dr. Rodriguez | Episode 1

The topic of Episode 1 in my CosmeticSurg Video Journal is liposuction cannulas. In the Liposuction procedure, the cannula is the long slender rod which is used to extract fat from unwanted area. I will explore the evolution of the liposuction cannula and discuss why cannula size is important to get a good Liposuction result.

If you have a question about anything I say in the video, please ask! Remember that if you have a question, probably many people are also having the same question. So, by submitting questions in the comments below you are helping me, because I can’t always guess what patients want to know. I have not seen any procedures on your website for the upper arm. It is my understanding that the Vaser liposuction can both elimate fat and tighten the upper arms. What do you recommend for the upper arms
    • Dr. Ricardo L Rodriguez says:

In general the upper arm responds very well to liposuction. At the same time, the skin responds surprisingly well. So, for most cases I recommend liposuction first, and tell the patient if she needs a skin tightening, we can address it later and the scar will be shorter than if we had done the lift in the first place. I have yet to come back to any of these patients and had to do an arm lift. In cases after massive weight loss I do recommend arm lift first. Here the main problem is excess skin, not fat. The patients are usually very happy, but I don't like the scar. Patients after massive weight loss tell me they much prefer the scar to the floppy skin, but I wish there was another way to avoid the scar. As far as Vaser claims, beware. The ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) has put out a position paper stating that there are no medium or long term advantages to Laser or ultrasonic lipo over traditional lipo.

Great post. It was very easy to follow and explained things thoroughly. I have a website that talks briefly about liposuction options, tummy tucks, etc. If you'd like you might be able to find possible topic ideas there for your next video blog cast. Keep up the good work!
