What are the advantages of IV sedation over general anesthesia?   1. no endotrachael tube down your airway, which  means you are breathing on your own
  2. the medication administered in the IV results in less nausea than the meds which are used with general anesthesia

    I've been under general anesthesia three times for cosmetic surgery and 5 or six dental implants under conscience sedation in the last 2 yrs. I had sworn off any more surgery for a while because I have been experiencing extreme hair loss. I am currently talking with the surgeon about a neck lift under concsiece sedation. Is concsiece sedation easier on the body With respect to the hair loss issue. I really like IV sedation. If not any difference I may opt for not doing the neck lift.

      Fran: Conscious sedation is easier on the body. I do ALL my Plastic Surgery under sedation, but it is deeper than conscious sedations. In other words, you are breathing on your own but you don't feel or remember anything, unlike general anesthesia where your breathing is assisted. Intravenous sedation where the body is active enough to breathe on its own is a lot safer, and I have never heard a patient of mine complain about loss of hair.
