Hair Transplant

Male pattern baldness is a gradual loss and thinning of the hair on the front and top of the head. About 75% of men develop some degree of this, but only about 25% have a large degree of baldness. This is due to genetic and hormonal factors. The process of balding may take anywhere from five to thirty years to complete. It is very important that your hair transplant surgeon bears this in mind. so that subsequent hair loss does not result in an unnatural hair pattern.

Hair loss is less common in women but can be more traumatic since it is more unusual. After a complete medical exam some women are given hormonal testing. Most times no definite medical cause is found.Several non surgical therapies (Propecia Rogaine)are available at our Baltimore office. The most effective and permanent treatment is hair transplantation.

Will it look natural?

Dr. Rodriguez has performed many of these procedures and has a very experienced team of technicians. He uses the mini and micro follicle transplant technique. Each individual hair is placed in its own site, so there is no pluggy look. The front border is staggered to that even up close it looks completely natural. We aim to restore a natural hairline that will continue to look natural as you age. While a low hairline will look good in the 20s, it will not look natural in the 60s.

Can I ever have a thick head of hair? That depends on how many hairs you have to transplant. If you have only a small amount of natural hair around the ears and at the back of the neck you may not have enough to transfer to the top of the head. Only one in ten is turned away for this reason.

Will there be any scarring?

There is usually a very fine scar at the back of the head running. Many people have wide scars here from this procedure. We undermine the area and close it with special permanent sutures so the wound will not widen over time. Prior to using this technique many of our patients told us that they were embarrassed to go swimming. Now-- not even their hairdresser can see the scar.

I had a hair transplant done in the past. I am not happy. Can you help?

Probably. In the past many doctors performed hair transplants. They were recruited to work for large medical groups. You may have seen their ads in the back of the airline magazines. Many of these had no surgical training. A quick and favorite technique was the plug technique where a large plug of 10 -15 hairs was cut out of the scalp and planted in the front. This gives a completely unnatural (dolls hair/ corn row) appearance. It some cases we just remove the plugs. Other times we can harvest more hair and soften the pluggy look. Another option is to remove a portion of the hair follicles in the plug , divide these into individual follicles and then replace them around the remaining plug, making it very difficult to see the corn rows.

Complications

Complications are extremely rare. We estimate that over 99% of transplanted hair grows permanently in its new location.
